An impression perfume is a scent made by one brand that takes its direction from a well-known perfume by another brand. The perfumer studies the style of that scent, such as fresh and peppery, or sweet with vanilla, and builds a new perfume in the same style.
It is sold under its own name, in its own bottle, by its own brand. A good impression never pretends to be the perfume that inspired it.
How an impression perfume is made
Every perfume is built from notes. Notes are simply the smells inside it, and they come in three layers.
- Top notes are what you smell first. Citrus, pepper and fruit are common.
- Heart notes are the middle. Flowers, spices and lavender often sit here.
- Base notes stay the longest. Think vanilla, amber, musk, wood and oud.
To make an impression, a perfumer works out which notes give a famous scent its character, then blends perfume oils to land in the same family. The oils are mixed with perfumer's alcohol, rested, and bottled.

A big share of a designer perfume's price is not the liquid. It is the advertising, the famous faces, the heavy packaging, the shop rent and the cost of importing it.

- Look for a full list of notes. A serious brand tells you the top, heart and base notes.
- Check the type. Eau de parfum has more perfume oil than eau de toilette or body spray, so it is the stronger choice.
- Check the brand uses its own names and bottles. Brands that hide behind someone else's name or packaging are a risk.
- Buy by scent family. If you like fresh scents, stay with citrus and sea notes. If you like warm scents, look at vanilla, amber and oud.
- Pick cash on delivery if you are unsure. You pay when the parcel reaches you.

It depends on the scent more than the label. Heavy base notes like oud, amber and vanilla stay longer than light citrus ones. Choosing an eau de parfum helps as well.
